Finland Pavilion presents Josefina Nelimarkka’s artwork at the COP30 Climate Change Conference

Finnish artist Josefina Nelimarkka’s artwork The Cloud Hour will be presented as part of Finland’s Country Pavilion at the UN Climate Change Conference – COP30 in Brazil.

The next UN Climate Change Conference will be held in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025. Finland’s Pavilion, showcasing climate solutions by Finnish companies and institutions, brings together companies, municipalities, universities, NGO’s, and art.

Josefina Nelimarkka’s The Cloud Hour is an immersive video and sound installation that unfolds the hidden rhythms of our atmosphere. The artwork invites the audience to enter into the experiential space of clouds where art and science merge, calling for a recognition of our entanglement and collective responsibility within the shared space of air.

“It is fantastic to have Finnish contemporary art presented as part of the Pavilion, building cross-disciplinary collaborations and new perspectives”, says Paula Parviainen, Ambassador for Culture and Creative Industries from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.

“Josefina Nelimarkka’s work highlights how Finland is committed not only to climate action but also to its strong legacy of creativity and art-making. Her work embodies the power of art to translate scientific knowledge and environmental awareness into experiential understanding, reflecting Finland’s long-standing dedication to creativity and sustainability”, Parviainen continues.

“Art and artists play a central role in addressing the urgent challenges of our time – opening space for dialogue, reflection, and imagination where new solutions can emerge. It is wonderful for Finnish art to be presented also in these kinds of cross-disciplinary and unexpected contexts. It reaches new audiences and supports the Pavilion to stand out in a meaningful way”, says Frame Contemporary Art Finland’s CEO Juha Huuskonen.

By translating scientific data into a multisensory experience, The Cloud Hour transforms the Finland Pavilion into a space for exploring the invisible processes that shape our living planet.

“Climate action begins with perception”, says Josefina Nelimarkka. “Clouds appear as ethereal, yet they hold extensive data on the atmospheric conditions and hydrological processes that shape our planet. Through climate data technology, I aim to make the invisible visible, to awaken creative imagination towards sustainability and more resilient futures.”

To create the interactive climate data-driven art, Josefina Nelimarkka has worked in a long-term collaboration with climate scientists from the Institute of Atmospheric and Earth System Research, INAR, at the University of Helsinki. Additionally, the presentation at COP30 is supported by VAISALA, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland & Embassy of Finland in Brazil.
