This autumn Frame will organise a series of talks that offer a platform for international contemporary art professionals to discuss their practice and current topics in contemporary art during their visits to Finland. The talks programme kicks off on 31 August with a Morning Coffee Club discussion highlighting the work of the artist Tiina Raitanen. Frame’s new publication, Altern Ecologies, will have its official launch in conjuction with a Frame Espresso discussion on 8 September. In the 13 September session, Mami Kataoka, Chief Curator of the Mori Art Museum Tokyo, will talk about different cultures and their varying relationships with nature. October will see a group of contemporary art professionals from the Benelux countries discuss current practices and trends in European art organisations.

Morning Coffee Club: Tiina Raitanen
The talks programme kicks off with Tiina Raitanen discussing her work Render. The talk will be led by the curator and writer Hanna Ohtonen. The Morning Coffee Club is a series of discussions in which each session presents one work by one artist. It is organised in collaboration with the HIAP Helsinki International Artist Programme. The discussion will be in Finnish.

Frame Espresso: Book launch of Altern Ecologies
The first edition released in the Framed Conversations publication series, Altern Ecologies. Emergent Perspectives on the Ecological Threshold at the 55th Venice Biennale (Eds. Taru Elfving and Terike Haapoja), will have its official launch in conjunction with this Frame Espresso discussion, in which Terike Haapoja will be accompanied by curator Jenni Nurmenniemi (HIAP), artist Mari Keski-Korsu (Pixelache) and director Erich Berger (The Finnish Bioart Society). The Frame Espresso series is a forum for critical discussions on current trends, topics and challenges within contemporary art.

Mami Kataoka: Awareness of the Invisibles
The chief curator of the Mori Art Museum Tokyo, Mami Kataoka, will visit Finland in September under Frame’s expert visitor programme. In this discussion to be held at the Helsinki Art Museum HAM, Kataoka will talk about her practice and one topic in particular: how different cultures have different ways of perceiving nature as relates to their climate, belief systems and folklore traditions. Starting with a look at Japanese perspectives on nature and tradition, this lecture will explore how our awareness of the invisibles has the potential to open up our view of the universe and diverse value systems in a globalised world, helping us seek a state of equilibrium.

Meet the Curator: Marianne Mulvey
The Meet the Curator series gives voice to international guests hosted by Frame under its curatorial residency programme and international visitor programme. In September the curator of Tate Modern, Marianne Mulvey, will talk about her curatorial practice and current research period at the HICP residency.

Elspeth Mitchell: Feminist-Oriented Art Practices
This autumn Frame will host Elspeth Michell, a visual arts programmer and researcher from Leeds, UK. She is currently undertaking a PhD project at the University of Leeds which explores audio-visual art practices that are concerned with girlhood, sexuality and difference. In her lecture Mitchell will talk about her research project and explore the question: ‘what (or who) makes possible feminist-oriented art practices, and why?’.

Contemporary Art Professionals from the Benelux countries: Shaking Societies
A group of curators and contemporary art professionals from the Benelux countries will visit Helsinki in October. The group includes Nav Haq, curator of M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) and the 9th Gothenburg Biennale, Zöe Gray, curator of the WIELS Contemporary Art Center, Sophie Lauwers, head of exhibitions at BOZAR and Enrico Lunghi, Director of MUDAM Luxemburg. In the discussion they will present their recent projects and explore how organisations operating in a European context are responding to changes in society. The visit is organised in collaboration with the Finnish Institute in the Benelux and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art.
