Two Finnish artists, Kaarina Kaikkonen and Mika Taanila, are exhibiting their work this Fall in two new contemporary art venues in Shanghai, China and Nagoya, Japan.
Kaarina Kaikkonen exhibits her work at the K11 Art Foundation’s new exhibition space opened in Spring 2013 in Shanghai. The chi K11 Art Space includes 3000 square metres of space for exhibitions, workshops and encounters with artists. The newly opened art mall’s mission is to bring contemporary art and artists closer to both travellers coming to Shanghai as well as the local community.
Kaarina Kaikkonen’s exhibition in Shanghai is a collaboration between K11 Art Foundation and Collezione Maramotti. It displays two installations, Are We Still Going On? and From Generation to Generation.
Kaikkonen works directly in existing spaces, interpreting them anew by using everyday objects, such as clothes. Are We Still Going On? was originally commissioned by Collezione Maramotti for the former garment manufacturing facilities of fashion house Max Mara, now housing the Collezione Maramotti collection. The exhibition in Shanghai also features a video made in 2012 by Italian filmmaker Beatrice Marchi during the ten days of the installation of the work at Collezione Maramotti.
Mika Taanila takes part in the Aichi Triennale, first organised in 2010 in Nagoya, Japan. As a new addition to the international biennale calendar, the event showcases not only contemporary visual art, but also performing arts.
Mika Taanila’s video installation The Most Electrified Town In Finland (2012) participates in the second Aichi Triennale in Nagoya, Japan. The work deals with the construction of the world’s most powerful nuclear plant Olkiluoto 3 in the city of Eurajoki in Finland. The three-channel installation was premiered last year at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, Germany.
The theme of Aichi Triennale is featured in the exhibition subtitle Awakening. Where Are We Standing? Earth, Memory and Resurrection. The Triennale brings together from and outside of Japan contemporary arts and performing arts including dance, theater and opera that resonate with the socio-political phenomena and reverberations in the world. The event takes place in four of the biggest museums in Nagoya with 75 participating artists.
