Screening and lecture by Juha van ‘t Zelfde on 28 August

Art School Maa and Frame Contemporary Art Finland co-organise a screening and talk by artist Juha van ‘t Zelfde on Thursday, 28 August at 5 pm. The event takes place at Vapaan Taiteen Tila (Vilhovuorenkuja 15–16, Helsinki) and is open for all to participate.

Juha van ‘t Zelfde is a Finnish-Dutch artist, organiser, and teacher based in Amsterdam. His work explores the relationship between history, experience, and possibility, emerging in response to specific social, economic, and political conditions.

At the event, the screening of Juha van ‘t Zelfde’s film RoXY will be introduced by the artist and followed by a conversation. van ‘t Zelfde’s visit, organised by Art School Maa, is supported by Frame travel grant.

From Dada to techno, from protest to dancefloor, the film RoXY (2022) shows how young people in Amsterdam, through play, collectivity, and refusal, created spaces of resistance and imagination. The revolt of Homo Ludens reminds us that nightlife is more than entertainment—it is a rehearsal for freedom, a collective uprising against the limits imposed by capitalism, and an opening towards new possibilities for living otherwise.

Juha van ’t Zelfde works with sound, moving image, pedagogy, and architecture to make room for desire, grief, refusal, imagination, and struggle. He focuses on the role of solidarity, mutual aid, and collective joy in imagining a liberatory culture — one that moves beyond hierarchy and domination.

Welcome!
