Open Call for orientation trip 2019 to the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan

Frame Finland opens a call for two Finland-based art mediators and artists to join orientation trip to the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan in autumn 2019. Frame joins an orientation trip organised by the Mondriaan Fund in collaboration with the Danish Arts Foundation and the Swiss Pro Helvetia.

From October 20 to November 2, 2019, the destinations are the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah) and Pakistan (Karachi and Lahore). The purpose of the trips is to familiarise visual artists and art mediators to cultural regions and contemporary art that they have not encountered in their earlier work.

The programme consists of visits to museums, art centers, galleries, artist-in-residences, artists, collectors and local key figures in the various cities. The primary purpose of the trip is to provide an overview of the contemporary visual arts sector in these countries, to introduce the main actors and to introduce the participants to the possibilities of exchange, as well as the motives and backgrounds of the various parties. The trip also offers a great opportunity to network with colleagues from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark.

The trip to United Arab Emirates and Pakistan offers the participants a possibility to familiarise with artistic contexts and cultural spheres that have been widely debated in relation to human rights and cultural soft power. It offers the opportunity to create personal experiences of these contexts beyond media representations and simplified geopolitical narratives.

Programme

The participants must take into account a very intensive program and a commitment that extends beyond the journey itself. During and after the trip, participants are expected to give presentations about their work, participate in discussions and make the acquired knowledge accessible to the discipline, for example by making a report. During the trip, participants keep a blog with descriptions of the locations visited.

Who can apply?

The orientation trip is open to art mediators and visual artists based in Finland. We encourage both independent curators as well as curators who are affiliated with institutions to apply.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

· Participation in the tour has clear relevance to your future curatorial or artistic practice
