Frame Espresso: Collectivity Beyond Global North

With Renée Mboya, Asep Topan and Christopher Wessels
Tuesday 6 November 2018
10 am–12 noon
Sinne (Iso-Roobertinkatu 16, Helsinki)

This year Frame’s Espresso discussion series has focused on the role of collective practices in contemporary art amidst today’s ongoing societal transformations. In spring, we discussed collectivity as a way of organizing and acting within artist-run initiatives as well as in the context of institutional values and the aims of small and midscale institutions.

This discussion was based on the Agencies of Art report by curator and theorist Jonatan Habib Engqvist and curator, critic and writer Nina Möntmann. The report looks into the artistic, social, societal and economic significance of contemporary kunsthalles within a Nordic context.

Collectivity Beyond Global North expands the scope of the discussion by viewing collectivity not only as way of working and organizing as a locally rooted phenomena, but also as a practice that has the potential to challenge normalized geographical and cultural divisions.

Collectivity Beyond Global North will open with presentations by Renée Mboya and Asep Topan on collective artistic organizations and practices in Nairobi and Jakarta. Writer, curator and filmmaker Renée Mboya will speak about the evolution of Weaving Kenya, a feminist collective formed in 2012 as a staging ground for women’s collaborative and cooperative creativity. Curator Asep Topan, who is currently on a HICP residency in Helsinki, will briefly present historical aspects of collectivity in an Indonesian art context, from the independence struggle to the post-dictatorship period.

These presentations will be followed by a commentary by cinematographer, cultural worker and artist Christopher Wessels, who will reflect on the Museum of Impossible Forms and current practice of the Miracle Workers Collective.

Collectivity Beyond Global North is the last discussion in the Frame Espresso series. Frame’s programme will be renewed in 2019.
