Meet the Curator: A talk with Richard Birkett

Richard_Birkett

We have a pleasure of hosting a Meet the Curator talk with curator Richard Birkett on Tuesday 28 June at 6–7.30 pm at Frame’s office (Ratakatu 1 b A 9, 6th floor). Birkett is currently working at the HICP residency on Suomenlinna Island.

At the event, Richard Birkett will present aspects of the research he has been focusing on while on residency at HIAP. This research will contribute to the development of a publication, produced in collaboration with the New York based artist Cameron Rowland, extending out of Rowland’s solo exhibition at Artists Space in early 2016. The exhibition served as a critical analysis of particular materials, offering an understanding of the interdependence of carceral machinery, infrastructural development, and the genealogical function of property. The forthcoming book seeks to further consider the terms of racial capitalism and its development.

Richard Birkett is curator at Artists Space, New York. He was previously curator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London from 2007 to 2010. He has curated exhibitions and programmes with artists including Chto Delat?, Cameron Rowland, Aaron Flint Jamison, Bernadette Corporation, Hito Steyerl, Terry Atkinson, Laura Poitras, and Cosey Fanni Tutti; and group projects including Nought to Sixty (ICA, 2008), Talk Show (ICA, 2009), Radical Localism: Art, Video and Culture from Pueblo Nuevo’s Mexicali Rose (Artists Space, 2012), Frozen Lakes (Artists Space, 2013) and and Materials and Money and Crisis (with Sam Lewitt, mumok, Vienna, 2013).

Helsinki International Curatorial Programme HICP, co-organised by Frame and HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, provides curators with an opportunity to carry out research and work on international curatorial projects while building contacts with art professionals and organisations in Finland.

Come and join us for a discussion and some refreshments. Welcome!
