Grants for artists
Frame awards travel grants for international exhibition projects of Finnish and Finland-based artists and project grants for international art publications. See application periods and instructions below.
Travel grants for artists
- Applications for trips in 2025 can be submitted continuously until 31 October 2025.
- The application deadlines for trips taking place in 2025 are:
- 31 December 2024
- 28 February 2025
- 30 April 2025
- 15 June 2025
- 31 August 2025
- 31 October 2025
- Decisions are made every two months.
- Decisions are announced approximately four weeks after each application deadline. The decisions at the beginning of the calendar year are usually published by the end of February, depending on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s state subsidy decision.
Project grants for international art publications
- The application periods for 2025 project grants are from 1 to 30 November 2024 and from 1 to 31 March 2025.
- The deadline is the last day of the application period at 11:59 pm Finnish time.
- The results of the November application period are usually published by the end of February, depending on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s state subsidy decision.
- The decisions on the March application period are announced approximately eight weeks after the deadline.
The purpose of the grant is to promote the international career development of Finnish artists or artists based in Finland by promoting their networking and opportunities to exhibit or perform abroad. The purpose of grants awarded by Frame is based on the strategy of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and Frame’s own strategy.
Who can apply?
- Visual artists who are Finnish or based in Finland.
- Work groups formed by Finnish artists or artists based in Finland.
- Travel grants may not be applied on behalf of another person. The contact person of a work group must be among the travellers.
- Organisations such as associations, cooperatives or companies are not eligible for the travel grant for artists. To covert artists’s travel expenses they can apply for a project grant for exhibiting work by Finnish artists abroad. Finnish contemporary art organisations can apply for a travel grant to invite international art professionals to Finland.
For what purposes can a travel grant be applied for?
- Artists can apply for a travel grant when they perform or present their work outside Finland, such as in a solo or group exhibition, biennale, triennale, festival or other contemporary art event.
Travel grants can only be applied for to cover personal or work group’s
- Travel expenses
- Accommodation expenses
- Transport expenses
- Insurance of artworks during transport
Travel grants cannot be spent on
- Residencies (including travel to and from)
- Per diems or living costs
- Gallery rental or participation fees
- Production and material costs of artworks
- Installation costs or equipment purchases
- Artistic work
- Studies, theses
- The expenses of foreign artists not based in Finland
- Events or exhibitions in Finland
When to apply?
- Applications for trips in 2025 can be submitted continuously until 31 October 2025.
- The application deadlines for trips taking place in 2025 are:

- The decisions on awarded travel grants are announced approximately four weeks after the deadline. The decisions at the beginning of the calendar year are usually published by the end of February, depending on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s state subsidy decision.
- The deadline is the last day of the application period at 11:59 pm Finnish time.
- Applications submitted after the deadline will be processed during the next decision round.
- The grant must be spent the year in which it is awarded.
- The grant application must be submitted prior to traveling.
Required appendices
- Travel plan: purpose of trip, dates and programme, description of venue, as well as importance of the trip to the promotion of the applicant’s international career.
- Curriculum Vitae (1–2 pages) or biography.
- Work groups: short Curricula Vitae or biographies.
- 3–5 images per participating Finnish artist. Attachments should be in PDF or JPG format. The maximum file size is 3 MB.

Who can apply?
- Finnish artists or artists based in Finland.
- The project grant for an international art publication can also be applied by Finnish or foreign publishers and Finnish or foreign contemporary art organisations.
For what purpose can this project grant be applied for?
- This project grant may be applied for foreign-language publications with international distribution that present the work of Finnish artists or artists based in Finland, or Finnish art in general.
Project grants can only be applied for to cover the following expenses:
- Printing expenses
- Writer fees
- Translation fees
- Graphic design fees
Project grants cannot be spent on:
- Per diems, living costs
- Studies, theses
When to apply?
- The application periods for 2025 project grants are from 1 to 30 November 2024 and from 1 to 31 March 2025.
- The grant must be spent the year in which it is awarded.
- Grants cannot be applied for retroactively.
- We will not process late applications or applications submitted through other channels than the grant service.
Required appendices
- Publication plan: a description of the publication and its significance for the artist’s international career, as well as publisher, scope, print run, date of release, work group (i.e. writers, photographer, translator, graphic designer).
- International distribution plan: how will the publication be distributed globally?
- Curriculum Vitae (1–2 pages) or biography per each participating Finnish artist
- 3–5 images per participating Finnish artist. Attachments should be in PDF or JPG format. The maximum file size is 3 Mb.
