Basak Senova appointed curator for Helsinki Photography Biennial

Helsinki Photography Biennial has appointed Basak Senova as the curator of Biennial 2014. The biennial held in spring 2014 examines ecological issues and presents critical views on images of nature. Senova addresses the theme by investigating the fallacies of ecological knowledge.

Basak Senova is a curator and designer based in Istanbul. She has been writing on art, technology and media, initiating and developing projects and curating exhibitions since 1995. In 2009 Senova curated the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale.

Helsinki Photography Biennial is an urban festival presenting contemporary photo/lens-based art. It is organized every two years by Union of Artist Photographers in Finland. In 2014 biennial presents 19 projects by the following artists: Ali Cherri, Barbaros Kayan, Braco Dimitrijević, Daniel García Andújar, Hana Miletic, Jawad Al Malhi, Jesper Just, Marja Helander, Mary McIntyre, Oliver ResslerOlof JarlbroRaqs Media CollectiveSerkan TaycanSociété RéalisteTamas DezsoTomislav GotovacTuula NärhinenWillie Doherty and Yane Calovski.

The first Helsinki Photography Biennial took place in 2012 focusing on the theme of urbanity. Previously the festival was known as Helsinki Photography Festival and it was organized parallel with the Triennial of Finnish Photography. In 2012 two events were combined into Helsinki Photography Biennial.

Helsinki Photography Biennial 2014 is held 27 March–4 May. It is organized in cooperation with The Finnish Museum of Photography. The preliminary program and venues are published on Biennial’s web page.
