Barbara Horvath

Curator and Head of Operations at PART Residency, Vienna

Barbara Horvath has joined PART International Art Residency Austria as Curator and Head of Operations in 2024. She is a Vienna-based curator and co-founder of art hoc projects with two decades of experience pioneering experimentation at the nexus of contemporary and public art, ecology, and interdisciplinary syntheses, exploring alternative spaces for thought and pushing beyond traditional formats through innovative scenography and visual storytelling.

Trained as an art historian, Barbara Horvath has held key positions at renowned institutions, including TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, the MAK Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, Lehmann Maupin in New York, and Public Art Vienna. She also served until 2022 as Artistic Director at Kunstverein Eisenstadt. From 2023 to 2025, she worked at KunstHausWien, Europe’s first “Green Museum,” where she curated notable solo exhibitions featuring Anne Duk Hee Jordan, Emma Talbot, and Mika Rottenberg. In addition to her institutional roles, Barbara Horvath’s independent curatorial projects include exhibitions at the Angewandte University Gallery and das weisse haus in Vienna, as well as public art initiatives in Karlsruhe (Michael Beutler, Erika Hock), St. Pölten (Eva Schlegel, Aldo Giannotti), and Vienna (Böhler & Orendt, Anna Khodorkovskaya). 

Barbara Horvath co-founded art hoc projects with Lisa Ortner-Kreil, an initiative dedicated to bringing contemporary art to unconventional locations. She is also a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and serves as a jury member for the prestigious Esterházy Art Award. She lives and works in Vienna.
