Curatorial Assistant Exchange Programme is a new opportunity for emerging curators and art professionals to gain work experience and be part of the preparation and production of a major art event in the Nordic-Baltic region. The programme aims to create paid internship opportunities for young art professionals, and to promote co-operation between the Nordic and Baltic countries.
The partners of N.B.C – Nordic-Baltic Curatorial Research Programme – CCA, Estonia, Frame Contemporary Art Finland, and CRIS, The Nordic Art Association, Sweden, are now inviting emerging art professionals of the region to apply for the 2018 curatorial assistant exchange programme. The deadline for the applications is April 1st 2018.
Applications are open to curators and art managers, or recent graduates interested in the contemporary art field of Estonia, Sweden and/or Finland. The assistant curator will work closely with the appointed supervisor, supporting them in various curatorial responsibilities.
2018 partner events of the programme and the internship periods:
– 13th Baltic Triennial exhibition in Tallinn: internship May-June 2018
– The Baltic Circle festival in Helsinki: internship October-November 2018
– Nya Småland, international contemporary art project: internship period negotiable, Autumn 2018 / Spring 2019
Application process
The deadline for submitting is April 1, 2018. Each participant will present an application to opencall@cca.ee, where they also specify their preferred order of the institutions/events. The jury will then select three applicants who will each work with one of the institutions/events.

– Motivation letter outlining the applicant’s interests in the selected institution/event
– Recommendation letter
Please note that Estonian-based curators must choose between Finnish and Swedish projects (Baltic Circle or Nya Småland), Finnish-based curators must choose between Estonian and Swedish projects (Balti Triennial or Nya Småland) and Swedish-based curators must choose between Estonian and Finnish projects (Baltic Circle or Baltic Triennial).
Requirements
– Higher education (at least BA level) in the field of visual arts
– Fluent English speaker
– Must be based either in Estonia, Finland or Sweden
– It is useful to have some job experience in the field of visual arts
The programme offers a scholarship of 1200 EUR/per month and covers return travel costs for each participant. The local partners will help with accommodation arrangements for the participants. The programme is supported by the Nordic Culture Point.
The Baltic Triennial 13 is the major regional international art event in 2018. For the first time since its foundation in 1979, the Baltic Triennial will take place in the three Baltic countries. Opening at the CAC in Vilnius, Lithuania in May 2018, June 2018 at Tallinn Art Hall, Estonia, and September 2018 at Kim? Riga, Latvia. The three distinct exhibitions act as different chapters to form the Triennial.
Baltic Circle is an international contemporary theatre and art festival organised annually in November in Helsinki. The next edition takes place 13 – 17 November 2018. The festival is an artwork that brings intensities into the city, takes stands on current questions, and ignites dialogue. New Småland is organised and funded by Kalmar Art Museum, Kulturparken Småland, Vandalorum and Växjö Konsthall together with The Region of Jönköping County, Region Kronoberg and Regional Council of Kalmar County and Linnéuniversitetet with support from The Swedish Arts Council. www.nyasmaland.se
