Finnish artist duo IC-98 returns to London’s arts and exhibition center Beaconsfield with their new exhibition Arkhipelagos. In the exhibition, the artists present hand-drawn animation works: Arkhipelagos (Navigating the Tides of Time)– a 3-channel video installation – and Arkhipelagos (Ebb) – an animated video –, both from 2013.
Based in Turku, Finland, IC-98 is Visa Suonpää (b. 1968) and Patrik Söderlund (b. 1974). IC-98 will represent Finland in the next Venice Biennale in 2015.
This is IC-98’s second exhibition at Beaconsfield following their debut UK show held at the same venue in 2012. In their 2012 exhibition, A View from the Other Side, the artists presenetd their namesake animation work which focussed on the depiction of the slow passage of time in relation to architectural representation of human endeavour.
The current exhibition Arkhipelagos builds on this work, with an elegiac take on planet earth and human mark-making on its surface. In the video installation Arkhipelagos (Navigating the Tides of Time) survivors try to navigate in the aftermath of a future catastrophe, in a place where no geographical reference points remain and only time and weather reign.
